We weaned Eve and Tux over the weekend. This is always an emotional thing, sometimes more than others! Frosty and Eve are just fine apart, thank you very much. Within an hour of separation a thunderstorm moved in and Frosty calmly moved to the shelter in her pasture and hung out there for the duration. Cookie alternates between “forgetting” that she has Tux, and missing him! Sometimes she paced the fence line while Frosty grazed nearby, and other times she put her head down to eat as if it’s just another day at the park. Tux, too, was more upset than Eve, though neither Tux nor Eve paced or whinnied much. They were ready. Good moms make calm babies:) We put the babies on the foaling stall cam for a few days while we began to work with them more individually in the arena. The best news of all is that Penny is in foal! We will need to check her again at the end of the month, but so far so good. We will keep her on Regumate once a day to try to make sure she keeps this pregnancy. Penny has conceived several times and then resorbed the foal after a number of weeks; once developing a false pregnancy until the very end with all the pregnancy characteristics and udder development. We are very excited about the possibility of another Zippy-Penny foal! Today we turned Sandy & Mattie and Roxy & Chester out together, and readied two cameras plus a video camera to capture the action. We thought that since Sandy and Roxy hadn’t been together in over a month and the babies had never seen each other, there was bound to be a little excitement. Well, we almost thought we saw them all yawn, ROFL!! Chester was napping in the farthest corner of the pasture and eventually came over to see what was up. He was actually pretty interested in Mattie (which was not reciprocated!) until Sandy told him off. After that it was back to business as usual!! |
