Saddlebrook Appaloosa Horses

• March 1, 2006 - Good Bye

This week’s update is dedicated to Maggie the Pig. Maggie came to us as a rescue 11 years ago (longer than I have known Susan!) and we figured she was a couple years old then. As you may know, Maggie has been having some old age issues like arthritis which got really bad this last year even though we had her on a low dose of aspirin and a diet recommended by the vet. The arthritis just became too much even for our spunky little gal and she went from limping to hobbling to just not being able to use her legs at all. During the last week, Maggie couldn’t even get up to eat or drink without help. We were hoping that some additional medication the vet prescribed would make her feel better, but she still was unable to get up or feed herself. She did not even eat a piece of fruit on Friday, which was her very favorite thing. After lots of tears and talk, we decided to do right by Maggie and had the vet come and put her to sleep. It was very sad and she will be greatly missed around here. It really hits me as I put some scraps of food down the garbage disposal. You see I met Maggie for the first time about the same time I met Susan, and ever since that day we have been saving our scraps for Maggie. I just know somewhere up there she is running around the pasture like she used to do here, and lying in the nice warm sun.
