Saddlebrook Appaloosa Horses

• June 7, 2006 - The Weight is on.

We planted hay this year in our back field. It’s land we usually lease out each year to a neighboring farmer, but with hay as scarce as it’s been this past year, we needed to have an additional source. Well, it’s amazing how fast it has grown from the little tiny seeds. It is about a foot tall already. The corn in our neighboring farmers’ fields is also coming up quickly. So far, we have had a great combination of rain and sun. Let’s hope it continues that way.

The foals are doing really well. Romeo and Phoebe are holding their weight, eating and “hoofing” normally which is great. Sometimes the stress of being separated from mom will cause weanlings to mope around for a short period of time and not be as interested in eating. Not these greedy little babies! Today they were outside getting some fresh air and exercise out in the small front pasture near the new barn. It’s close to the office and we can keep an eye on them, just in case they catch a glimpse of Frosty and Cookie over in the big pasture near the house and get too excited. But no worries – everyone was perfectly content.

Bill has been nailing some fences back together. Fanny and Spice kept reaching further and further over to get to the tall grass on the other side. Spice is no slouch, but Fanny is probably the one that got most of it down. She’s just so big and solid and very determined. They broke down about 6 six-foot sections of fence all together! Bill also took the tractor and cleared a path along the fence so they wouldn’t be tempted again. When Fanny and Spice were in the other pasture while Bill was working, they broke through that one as well! It was good to get them back out where they had lots of grass again.
