Saddlebrook Appaloosa Horses

• August 16, 2006 - A Long Goodbye

The show went well this weekend.  I got there early in the morning and lucky for me Phoebe had not messed herself up too bad. I had put on a sheet and slinky the night before, and I hoped that she just wouldn’t roll in a dirty spot.  I was lucky this time.  I got her out and longed her a while before it got too crowded.  Then Elizabeth of Andy and Elizabeth, (professional trainers) worked her magic on Phoebe making her mane nice and straight and banded.  She was ready and looking good.  She was really well behaved the entire time and Elizabeth commented on how nice she was to band.  She showed fairly well also.  We always have a hard time competing against the really big halter horses. Those are horses which are bred not to ride, but just as body builders.  They are huge for the most part.  Phoebe held her own and finished in the middle of both classes. 4th out of 8, and 5th out of 11.  I was happy with it, because she was so well behaved in the arena.  With the others flipping and moving all around, she stood just fine, almost falling asleep in both classes.

Kari rode Spice and Squeakers today and the kids rode Fanny and Penny.  Kari really liked the way Spice is turning out as she is a little ahead of Squeakers.  I am hoping she can show one of them in the Sept show in Elkorn, WI.  Keep your fingers crossed.  We still have a lot of work to do on her, but she is built really nice, so we might get lucky.

Well, we end with some sad news. Bill’s dog, Elvira, passed over the rainbow bridge.  She went out for her usual morning walk with Joe, Sarah and Mabel, and when she got home she just didn’t seem right.  Her back legs kept giving out and she seemed confused. She didn’t even eat a dog biscuit, her favorite treat in the whole wide world. Bill took her to the vet and they just couldn’t really do anything for her.  At Elvira’s advanced age (she was 16 years old) you know every day is a gift, but it doesn’t make this kind of decision any easier. We’ll all miss you Elvira! Especially your Buddy Mabel.
