• November 15, 2006 - Chomping at the bit

Zippy gave us a little scare yesterday. He wouldn’t even touch his breakfast and wasn’t at all his energetic self. Usually he is “chomping at the bit” to get at his grain and then outside. He just sort of stood there with none of his usual vigor and stared at the bucket. He looked OK otherwise – he wasn’t pacing or sweaty and his gums looked normal. Any of these by themselves or in combination are sure signs of distress. We called the vet anyway and he came right out and checked Zippy from head to toe. By the time the vet got here, Zippy was already “feeling his oats” a little more, and the vet said his heart rate, breathing and digestive sounds all checked out normal. Just to be on the safe side, we went ahead and gave him “the big drink” (water and mineral oil) to clean him out. He seems to be back to normal now and we are very grateful it was only a tummy ache.

While the vet was here, we also had him pull a coggins on Romeo. He will be on his way to his new place soon *sniff sniff*, so we need to have him all ready to go. Bill will work with him on trailer loading next week.

Our boy Luke arrived home this week! We put him in the foaling stall so everyBuddy could see him. Boy, he sure looks great. Luke was tall when he left but not filled out at all. Now he has lots of muscles and looks very sleek and fit. We are happy to have him home.

We finally got all of the cut hay in last week.  It’s actually only about half of the hay in the field and getting it is only the first step.  The second is putting it all away.  Luckily Kate and Chris took 400 bales so far and plan to take more when we cut again after the ground freezes.  Right now the ground is still too soft and the cutter will get stuck. I have put away three of the hay wagons so far and the last one hopefully will get done this week. Gotta catch my breath and give my sore muscles a break first!
