We moved Frosty over to the foaling stall since she is getting close and Cookie is all done. Cookie and the colt moved to a double wide stall across the aisle. As you guessed the news around here is still that it is cooold. Nobody went outside earlier this week, even during the day. The kids stayed home from school, the adults and the horses all stayed in. Even Erika’s horses, Rico and Flare stayed inside the arena, and they seem to thrive on the cold weather. But it was just waaay too cold even for them. Luckily we have room to get everyone inside. We got a call from Bandit’s owner, who is very sweet, just checking up on him to make sure he was OK. He had the tiniest shiver one morning, so Erika threw a blanket on him and he was just fine. She said Rico does the same thing even though he is very used to the cold. It finally warmed up to around 5 degrees today. A real heatwave. There was enough sun to melt the rest of the snow that was stuck up on top of the big metal barn roof. It did snow a little yesterday. It was so fine that it looked like sparkly silver glitter coming out of the sky. Now we know what it feels like to live in a snow globe!
Phoebe got her stitches out yesterday. The vet unwrapped her leg, looked at the wound and said, “Awesome!” That is always really great to hear from a vet. It does look good, there is still a tiny little bit of proud flesh right where the injury occurred that we will continue to work on as Phoebe’s leg heals. Hopefully we can minimize it and she will not have much of a scar. Everything else should heal up great with hardly any signs of a cut. The vet wrapped her up again and we can start hand walking Phoebe to get her moving a bit. She will have to wait a little longer to be on her own though, since we just know she will want to kick up her heels and we don’t want that cut to open up again. On Friday, we’ll take the wrap off again and the vet will advise at that point how to handle it next. Phoebe will probably have some sort of wrap for a while to keep the area protected, but it will be more flexible now that the stitches can’t be pulled out - what they call a standing wrap or a polo wrap. Don’t worry, Peg, we are taking very good care of your baby!
Cookie’s little guy is getting more precocious by the day and his curiosity and playfulness are showing. Just like most babies, he loooooves to run, run, run...and then just drops to the ground for a snooze. He also comes over to the office window quite a bit to peek in at what’s going on in there. All of a sudden his fuzzy little muzzle appears in the window as he stretches up to see us and we talk to him through the glass. He seems to be listening. We’ll see how long that lasts, lol!
