Roxy finally had her baby!! A pretty, loudly colored filly born late Friday afternoon. I had to have the kids at play practice at 4:30pm so Erika was on foal duty. Susan called at 4pm and when I told her Roxy was dripping she headed for home. Just as I reached play practice I got the call from Erika, that it was time. Susan arrived just as the sack was showing. In her work clothes, she was ready. Lucky for her she had her gold driving slippers (!!!) handy to put on her feet. (Hey, how come I get teased about my hat, my pajamas, my hair….but Susan can wear GOLD SHINY SLIPPERS in the barn and no one says a word?!? LOL) The birth was a little more difficult than normal and I arrived just as the filly was being delivered. Dr. Andy was three for three on his sexing of the foals this year. She was up very fast for a foal, less then 30 minutes. She also nursed quicker than normal (less than an hour), and she hasn't stopped moving since. Roxy on the other hand was lying down more than some of the other mares. She seems fine, but I am sure she is relieved that it is finally over. The foal is so lively that I think Roxy is just a little worn out. We know a little bit about how she feels - she hasn't gotten a good night's sleep in two weeks, and neither did WE! If any of you ever had children who were over-confident, too cute for their own good, extremely strong and not afraid of anything….you might want to start giving Roxy some advice right now for how to deal with Foxy. Or Muffet. Or whatever her barn name will be. She is a PISTOL. We'd have to say that she is the most vigorous foal we've ever had. Look out world, here she comes! We have been putting mom and babe in the arena for the last two days so the filly can run and work out all that tiny horse energy. The little one's vet exam went very well. She has gotten PLENTY of mother's first milk, she does not have a hernia, all her vital signs, eyes and lungs all checked out great. In addition to saying repeatedly how cute she was, the vet and assistant commented several times on how strong she was. Roxy, too, bounced back to a more normal disposition and energy level after a good night's sleep. Don't we all? She looks very good and all is well.
