• February 2, 2008 - In the swing of things...

Well, we are back at school and in the swing of things already. It feels like the end of Week 8, not Week 1! I have all senior classes (Year 10 / 11) and am getting the ESL program going. I am also running the Staff Association this year which will be a big job but I am hoping to get some other people involved.

Because school has been so busy I haven't been doing very much. I tend to get home, check my email and change, have dinner and do the dishes before I flake out on the couch. I knew I was tired the other night when I sat watching a reality medical show, a show about extreme rescues and then a VERY old repeat of NCIS.

I have worked on my story a little... finally worked out how I am going to change the ending, so that is one thing off my mind as far as that story goes. Also did some work on two of my fantasy stories that I haven't touched for quite a while.

The weather has been quite warm now for the past few weeks. I am looking forward to the cooller weather so I can start cooking my favourite meals again. We could also do with some good rains to green up the gardens and fill the rainwater tanks and reservoirs.

Gotta go now, will update soon.

• January 22, 2008 - Tuesday Night

Okay, so I've been a little bit lax in not updating in a while. Mostly because I am now in the last week of my holidays and have been very busy. Yesterday and today I have attended training and development. I have tomorrow off, back to school on Thursday and Friday for planning purposes and then have the weekend off, plus Monday as well for the Australia Day public holiday (which falls on a Saturday this year!). The students start back on Tuesday for an 11 week term.

I have enjoyed the long break, especially the chance to work on my writing, which I find hard to do during term time. I am going to attempt to carve some time out of every day to keep writing, even it means getting up a little earlier in the mornings. I have also purchased a new laptop, which I am enjoying. This wintertime I will be able to sit by the fire and type away madly. It's also nice to be able to sit in with the rest of the family while they are watching TV, although I am not sure they appreciate having me sing along to my favourite music!

My sister has had some good news with her job - she will be moving to a store that is closer to home. It is a change in departments but I know she is more than capable of the challenge. She is returning to the store that she started at as a nightfiller while she was in high school so in a way she is going in full circle.

• January 7, 2008 - Excerpt

So having mentioned a couple of times that I am writing stories, I thought I'd post a little bit of the one I have been working on lately. I began writing it in 1999, in high school and when I look at previous drafts I can really see where I have improved my writing style. Please bear in mind that this is still very much a work in process.

Background - A year before this scene, the main character was attacked and almost killed by her abusive, drug-dealer boyfriend. After the attack and his subsequent arrest, he was sentenced to a term in prison but has been recently released. Kayla moved away and changed her name, hoping that he would forget about her but inwardly she knows that he will follow her to the end of the earth for revenge.

Sinister Reasons

The black van waitedthree streets away from the apartment block, shaded by the leaves of an old oaktree. The driver was the only occupant visible through the tinted glass: he satwatching through binoculars as Kayla stepped out of her apartment building andinto the late spring sunshine. “Here she comes,” the driver reported to hiscompanions. “She’s right on time.”

He did not have to checkthe file on the dashboard to recognise Kayla Martin: months of reconnaissancemeant he recognised her even amongst a large crowd.

Subject leaving home base now,” the driver reported over the radio. When she turned left, he smiled. “She’sheading north at a nice, leisurely walk. Commencing stage two of surveillance.”He started the van and let it idle. “Teamtwo, base team, this is team one: are you both in place?

This is team two, affirmative,” a female voice answered.

This is base team. We copy that, Drew. Let us know when she’sapproaching the corner of Everson and Ninth. We’ll take her there.

* * *

Distracted by thoughts ofthe novel she had just finished reading for one of her classes, Kayla walkedhalfway to the subway station before she noticed the black van behind her, crawling at a pace that seemed far too slow. She gave it a passing glance, wondering if the driver was lost. Maybehe’s looking for a house along here… I know some of these places don’t havetheir numbers displayed very well.

Another glance a blocklater revealed that the van had crept a little closer. Kayla increased herspeed. She had been sensibly cautious since her release from hospital but sinceJason’s release her survival senses had gone into overdrive. Every noise sheheard at night was Jason breaking in. During the day he was behind every door, every tree, and every shop counter with a knife in his hand, waiting to jumpout and finish what he started. She jumped every time her phone rang andchecked three to four times a night to make sure that her door was locked, fully aware that if Jason found her she wouldn’t live to see another sunrise. Some days she waited by the window for hours before she went anywhere, watchingto make sure he really wasn’t out there waiting for her.

“Don’t be foolish,” shescolded herself softly. “Just because Jason is free now doesn’t mean he knowswhere I am. And even if he did, there’s no reason to think he’s in that van.” Despitethe sense of her argument she couldn’t stop herself from turning around again.

The van had come closeenough for her to get a good look at it. It was dirty and in desperate need ofa wash and the license plates were partially obscured by mud. The driver was maleand wore a baseball cap and sunglasses, making it difficult for Kayla to seewhether she knew his face. Kayla’s unease strengthened. What if it is Jason? He swore in court he’d kill me assoon as he got the chance. He meant it, I know he did; what if he’s waiting forme now?

She had been on her wayto the library but now she wasn’t so sure if continuing on her way was such agreat idea after all. Maybe I should keep going. I’ll be at the station soon andif he’s really following me he’ll show himself there. If it turns out just tobe a coincidence, well… I won’t have run home like a scared child for nothing.

She stopped at the cornerof the next side street and turned back to check on the van. It had stoppedseveral houses back and the driver was holding up a map. He must be lost after all. She smiled at her foolishness. And here I was worrying about nothing.

“Watch out!”

Kayla spun in the direction of the voice, just as she became aware ofthe sound of pounding feet on pavement. She saw a rush of colour moving inher direction before something slammed into her and knocked her to the ground. She automatically rolled as shelanded – courtesy of months of self-defence training – but the impact windedher, leaving her to lie where she had fallen. As sheattempted to gasp air back into her aching lungs, Kayla felt a pair of hands slideunder her underarms, helping her to sit up. As soon as she was able to breathe, she looked up, blinking in the bright sunlight. There were two men standingabove her dressed in tracksuits, their faces gleaming with a light sheen ofperspiration. Joggers. I must haveinterrupted their run. Oops.

The one closest to herhad brown hair and dark-brown eyes that watched her with quiet concentration;the other man was slightly taller than his companion, with blond hair and vividgreen eyes that fixed on her face when she met his gaze. The hair prickled onthe back of her neck as Kayla realised that the two men looked familiar, thoughshe was not entirely sure where she had seen them before. I have to stop being so paranoid. So I’ve seen them before… I probably passed them some other day. Shebrushed the feeling aside and studied their faces for a moment more. Still, I guess it can’t hurt to be a littlecautious, given the circumstances.

“Hey, are you okay?” Theblond-haired man asked, concerned. “That was a pretty bad fall. We should probablytake you to the hospital to get checked out.”

“Hospital? No, I’m fine,”Kayla assured him. “I just winded myself, that’s all. I’ll probably be a littlebruised tomorrow too, but I don’t think there’s anything broken.”

The brown-haired manextended a hand to help her stand. “I’m very sorry for knocking you over,” heapologised as she climbed to her feet. “I should have been looking–”

“I should have beenlooking where I was going, too,” Kayla told him as she extracted her hand fromhis grasp. She smiled at him. “Look, I’m fine, really.”

“I’m sure you are.” Hisvoice sounded faintly amused to Kayla’s ear. “So what’s your name, mysterygirl? And how come I haven’t seen you around here before now?”

“I’m kind of new to thearea,” she said. “I mean, well, I’ve only been here a few months and–”

“So are you single ortaken?” he asked. “Please don’t tell me you’re already seeing someone: it’druin my day.”

The sound of a vehicleapproaching distracted her. Kayla turned toward the street as the black van camearound the corner and cruised to a halt in front of her, the side door slidingsmoothly open to reveal two men seated in the rear. One was working on a laptopcomputer, a pair of headphones over his ears, the other was cradling a gun. Shetook a few steps back from the road, pressing a hand to her mouth. This doesn’t happen in real life.

She glanced at the twomen standing beside her, a sick feeling growing in the pit of her stomach whenshe realised that neither of the ‘joggers’ seemed troubled by the suddenappearance of the van or the threat the vans occupants posed.

“It’s all clear,” the manwith the headphones called. “The closest witness is the elderly woman threehouses down but she’s in the shower. Everyone else went to work as usual.”

Kayla edged back from thevan but the blonde man saw her moving and intercepted her, a smile creepingover his face. “You’re not going anywhere, Miss Martin.”

“I’m sorry, you must bemistaken,” Kayla countered as alarm spread through her. Jason. They have to be connected to Jason. But how do they know where to find me? Thepeople in the apartments and houses nearby had come to know her as ‘LauraFitzgerald’. She had confided her past to nobody, least of all these two strangers.“I don’t know anyone named Martin. My name is Laura Fitzge–”

“We know who you are, MsMartin.” The brown-haired man said. “We’re sorry to approach you this way, butwe need to speak with you about your relationship with Jason Peterson. Wouldyou come with us, please?”

Kayla stared at them. This doesn’t happen in real life. It’s anightmare, that’s all. It has to be.

“Ms. Martin?” the manrepeated. “Please, we really don’t have that much time.”

“Who are you?”

“That’s not importantright now,” he said. “Kayla, you need to trust us.”

“Trust you?” She studiedhim. “What kind of idiot do you think I am?” She knew she should run beforethey bundled her into the van but she wouldn’t get more than a few metres downthe street before one of them grabbed her. MaybeI can bluff my way out of this. “Look, I’m not stupid enough to get into avan with you. For all I know you could be kidnappers.”

“You don’t have achoice,” the blond one said flatly. “Our orders are to fetch you and if thatmeans taking you by force, well so be it.”

“I’m not going anywherewith you!”

The two men exchanged aglance.

“If that’s the way youwant it,” the brown-haired man said. “I’m sorry to have to do this, Kayla.”

He had barely finishedspeaking before he and the blond man grabbed hold of her arms and began to dragher the short distance to the van. She opened her mouth to scream but the blondman covered her mouth with a hand.

“Don’t try to fight,” hewarned. “You’ll regret it later.”

This is ridiculous. You can’t just abduct someone off thestreet without someone seeing! She dug her feet into the ground and tried desperately tothink of a way to break their hold but the self-defence classes she had takenhad only ever focused on fighting against oneattacker. They were three steps from the van’s door and without a fight, shewould have no chance; once she was in the van the two men with the guns could holdher while the door was slammed shut, locking any hope for freedom outside. No! I won’t let them take me!

She took all her strengthand all of her rage about being attacked and lashed out at the blond man, kicking him as hard as she could in the shin. He cursed and his grip slackenedslightly, which she took full advantage of by twisting her arm and breaking hisgrip. The brown-haired one yanked her toward him, wrapping his arms around herfrom behind but she knew how to break this hold and ruthlessly did so. She turnedand twisted, throwing him to the ground. By some element of luck, he slammedinto the blond man, knocking him over too. Before either of them could get totheir feet and take hold of her, she bolted back the way she had come. She gavethe occupants of the van one startled glance as she passed, praying theywouldn’t give chase.

“Do you want us to followher?” a man in the van asked.

The brown-haired manswore as he climbed to his feet, his eyes on the distant figure of theirtarget. “No, leave her be. She’s scared and frightened but she’s not stupid;she’ll know it’s time to go underground and call for help.” His brown eyesglittered. “Call Brooke and tell her we’re going to need the ambulance at sitetwo. We’ll intercept Kayla there.”

Feedback is very welcome. Please feel free to leave a comment or email me!

• January 6, 2008 - Breakfast with the Herd

I've had a quiet few days to begin the new year. We have had a fair bit of hot weather, which has meant that I have been hiding away inside. I don't tolerate the heat very well. The temperature is going to be VERY HOT by Wednesday (41C / 105F) last I checked.

I am going out with my friend K tomorrow to visit the beachside suburb of Glenelg. We should have a good time - it's not going to be too hot and there is lots to do, including The Beachhouse, which I haven't yet visited. We'll probably also have lunch there.

Today I went out early with my mum and took some photos of some horses that are agisted on one of the properties in the hills. They were waaay back at first but they eventually decided that we were worth checking out, depsite having Jess and Jemma barking at them from the back of the car!

I have been working feverishly on Sinister Reasons, trying to get some of it completed for K tomorrow. I have finished rewriting Chapters 1 & 2... so far, so good!

• January 1, 2008 - Happy New Year!

Happy New Year from Adelaide, Australia!

I went to the movies last night and saw the Disney film Enchanted, starring Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey. I would have to say that it is probably the best film I saw in 2007. It's not a film that everyone would enjoy (I admit to having a soft spot for Fairy-tales, romance, fantasy and happy endings) but it was an enjoyable (and positive) film to end the year with. There were homages to other Disney films and the music was also excellent - I intend to buy the soundtrack tomorrow. I went with a friend from uni and she and I also went out for dinner beforehand at Fasta Pasta (and they outdid themselves with my meal - it was delicious!)

I saw in the new year (and then went promptly to bed) but at 3:30am Jemma 'treed' a possum on the veranda posts, so I had to go catch her and shoo it away. I slept in and had a quiet day today. Mum, Dad and I took the dogs out for a drive this morning (as Mum commented - "we don't take our dogs for walks, we take them for drives" - which culminated in a hamburger from McDonalds and a quick run around in the park. It was warm again though (38C) so we didn't spend too much time in the sun. I had an afternoon nap, so now I am less grumpy than I was this morning.

I have worked on one of my stories again today. The friend I went out with last night is reading it for me to give me some feedback and has so far read to chapter 4. Unfortunately for her I have been working on a major rewrite of chapter 5 on but I promised that I'd try to have some more ready next time I see her. I should have the opportunity - this week is promising to be hot again, so I will hide under the air conditioning and write :)

Anyway, off to do some more.

Hope everyone has a safe and happy 2008

Sam

• December 29, 2007 - Reflections...

So Christmas is over for another year and now I am eagerly anticipating the new year. I have come a long, long way in the past twelve months.

I graduated from my Graduate Diploma in Education just before Christmas last year and since then have worked three terms, teaching English, SOSE, Australian Studies and working with students in the literacy and numeracy centre. I have taken a relief lesson in Maths, have made friends amongst the staff and also built good, steady relationships with the students that will benefit me next year. I have walked endless steps during yard duty and bought a SunSmart hat to wear which makes me look silly but the students love it. Probably because I can't see what they're doing because of the brim!

I have stayed at home but have started to think about saving to buy a house, a car and a holiday overseas to meet my friends in the US. I have spent some quality time with my family, including this Christmas just gone, have enjoyed time with my two beautiful border collies and have taken about a bazillion photos of my cousin's new baby because he is so photogenic! I have also spent good time with my friends and have celebrated their achievements as well as my own. I have also spent time with my online friends - chatting (including a very cool Voice Chat), watching horses and sharing moments from our lives.

I have left my job at Myer after two years, meaning that this Christmas really felt like Christmas and not a rushed working time. I even did the Christmas shopping for the family (and got it all right, except for the Honeydew Melon).

I have learnt to save money and also how to spend money online. I have ordered shirts from Cafepress and books from Amazon. I have ordered Painted Ponies and eyed off Grey's Anatomy merchandise on the official website. I have bought on Ebay and sold some items too.

I have made plans to renovate my room with polished floorboards, white furniture and bookshelves that will hopefully go from floor to ceiling, because I am seriously running out of bookshelf space! All of this will probably be coming from Ikea, which is a place that makes seriously delicious food, as well as cool looking furniture.

I have read LOTS of books. Next year I am going to keep a list of exactly what of read, even if it is my fourth or fortieth time reading it. Some of the books that I have enjoyed include Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by JK Rowling, Book of a Thousand Days and Austenland by Shannon Hale, Twilight, New Moon and Eclipse by Stephenie Meyer, the Obernewtyn Chronicles by Isobelle Carmody, Six Sacred Stones by Matthew Reilly and many of Jodi Picoult's books. I reread The Edge by Dick Francis, which is one of my favourite books and also Marley and Me by John Grogan, which made me cry... again! Biggest book discovery of the year was the Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer - not only did I read and fall in love with them but so did my students!

I have travelled to Sydney, where I visited the Taronga Zoo (always something I have wanted to do!), visited the Sydney Opera House, the Paddington and Rocks Markets, took a couple of ferry rides on the Harbour and went to the Three Sisters, where I went across the gorge on a Skyway, down into the gorge on the steepest cable-driven funicular railway in the world and came up again in a cable car. My fear of heights has never been tested more! I had hot chocolate and a piece of cake for $14 at Darling Harbour, visited Bondi Beach and The Gap and also went to see where Channel 7 Sunrise was filmed. I was also a witness to the Bogong Moth invasion of 2007!

I have listened to some great music and have seen some great films (I loved The Simpsons movie, especially the Spiderpig scene). The game that has kept my most busy this year is Final Fantasy XII on Playstation 2. I have also played The Sims 2 series, Zoo Tycoon 2 and also Age of Empires 3.

This is mainly the positive moments of the year but those are the things I want to look back on and smile about. No matter how scared I was about going into teaching, I have done it. No matter how scared I was when I realised I was about to be suspended 200m above the Jamison Valley, I have done it. And both those things (and others) weren't so bad.

I hope (I know) that 2008 will be everything and more that 2007 has been!

Sam

• December 22, 2007 - Beginnings...

So, I suppose I should start this blog by introducing myself. My name is Sam. I'm 23 years old, female and I currently live in Adelaide, Australia. I'm a high school English / ESL teacher. I have lived in Adelaide all of my life but I want to travel the world someday in the future to see friends in the US and also Great Britain and France.

I live at home with my parents and younger sister. We have two dogs (both border collies) who are part of the family - their names are Jess and Jemma. Jess is a superb soccer player... there's nothing she likes more than to be playing with her soccer ball. Jemma is mischievous and her favourite game is when she steals something (anything) and parades around with it. She's also the baby of the family. Both of our dogs are spoiled rotten and they know what the words biscuit, drive, bath and outside mean (amongst others). Jess's favourite party trick is jumping up to take her squeaky ball out of your pocket, whereas Jem will carry almost anything if you ask her to hold it. The trouble is, she doesn't always give whatever it is back! Her favourite item to carry is a sock.

As I said before, I'm a teacher. 2007 was my first year teaching out of uni and while it has been challenging (and a steep learning curve) I know that I am making a difference in the lives of my students. I am fortunate in that I picked up a new contract at my school to return in 2008, teaching English and ESL, possibly with a few other subjects as well. I try to take each day as it comes because each day throws different things my way. I am fortunate that we have a supportive staff :)

Outside of work I have a few different hobbies that I sometimes struggle to find time for. I love computers and am reasonably computer-savvy... I have just recently bought a new computer with Windows Vista and am really enjoying the new features. I also love the Microsoft Office 2007 suite. The best thing about the computer is the ability to play games my old computer couldn't handle very well, such as Zoo Tycoon 2. Other favourite PC games include The Sims 2 series, Age of Mythology, Age of Empires series and a multitude of horse-related games. I also play PS2 and Nintendo DS games. I love Final Fantasy VII, VIII, X, X2 and XII and sing along very badly in the Singstar games. On the DS I'd have to say that my favourite game is Pokemon Diamond.

I also write stories and spend a lot of time working on developing those. I mainly write fantasy but also have some suspense ones too. I started writing back in high school when I was in Year 10... I got so far ahead of my English class (I read the class novel overnight) that my teacher gave me a lot of free time and I began two stories (Sinister Reasons and Jewel) that I'm still working on nearly 10 years later.  I would love to publish one day but I am still working on my writing style. That said, my friend K is reading Sinister Reasons at the moment. I have to do some more for her soon. Most of my stories are in bits and pieces but I have about 10 that are approaching novel length.

I love taking photos and have a great camera (a Fujifilm Finepix S5600) that I try to take whenever I think I'm going somewhere interesting. I got some nice shots when I was in Sydney in October that I will try to post soon and I also take lots of photos of Jess and Jemma. I design logos for friends in the US and make webpages. Another hobby that I try to make time for is making beaded jewellery... I guess you could say that I have a lot of fun being creative!

I love to read and am usually able to read a book in a couple of hours. As a 12 year old I was reading my mum's books and now I'll read almost anything given the chance. That said, I generally read young adult fiction and the fantasy and crime genres. My best new find after the Harry Potter series was finding the Twilight saga by Stephenie Meyer, which I found thanks to another author I read, Shannon Hale in her Squeetus blog. I also love Tamora Pierce's books (can't wait for Bloodhound!), Jodi Picoult's novels and books by Australian authors Matthew Reilly and Garth Nix. I will write a favorite authors (and a favourite books) post another time. I have a lot of books at home which I catalogue on LibraryThing. I've just bought a barcode scanner from them, which will mean I will have far less to type in manually and far more time to do other stuff.

My favourite animal is the horse. I worked at a riding school for almost a year when I was in high school but the owner closed and moved interstate and I haven't really had the chance to start lessons again since. That said, once I have a permanant teaching position I intend to start lessons again and buy my own horse. My favourite breed is the Appaloosa (just love their colours). I discovered them when I started visiting Saddlebrook Appaloosas in 2001 and have seen 6 foals (Tux, Romeo, Phoebe, Sport, Chief and Moxy) born live on their webcams.

So that's me. I am planning to update this blog at least once a week - I feel that keeping a journal will help keep track of where I am when 2008 speeds by!

All the best for Christmas and a happy holiday to everyone!

Sam
